Phelps County, Missouri (February 5, 2018) – Two Rolla residents were injured in a Sunday afternoon multi-vehicle accident in Phelps County, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The wreck happened on Interstate 44 just east of Rolla at around 2:20 p.m. Sunday, February 4.

Troopers said a 2018 Kenworth tractor driven by Mark A. Girardeau, 53, of Register, Ga., was traveling eastbound on I-44 when he attempted to slow down for traffic ahead and was rear-ended by a 2013 Volvo tractor. The driver of the Volvo, David Stojkovic, 23, of Mount Prospect, Ill., lost control on the icy roadway.

Girardeau’s tractor then struck a 2011 Honda Civic and a 2012 Chrysler minivan that had been traveling eastbound and were stopped for traffic.

The force of the crash caused the Chrysler to strike the rear of a 2013 Ram pickup, driven by Jonathan D. Coleman, 36, of St. Clair. Coleman’s Ram in turn collided with the back of a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica, driven by Michael G. Kohler, 51, of Duncan, Ok.

The driver of the Chrysler minivan, Pitts S. Lesesne, 57, of Rolla, sustained moderate injuries. His passenger, Paula D. Lesesne, 53, also of Rolla, suffered serious injuries. They were both transported to Phelps County Regional Medical Center.

No other injuries were reported from the crash.

All occupants of the six vehicles were reportedly wearing their safety belts, troopers said.
