Are Wolf Hybrids Legal Pets in Missouri?

are wolf hybrids legal pets in missouri

Wolf hybrids are unusual pets that have grown in popularity. Also known as “wolfdogs,” hybrids between wolves and domestic dogs are admired for their unique characteristics. Despite their beauty, wolf hybrids will always be partially feral and could show different behaviors than standard domestic dogs. Because of this, states and localities might have regulations in place on wolf hybrids.

What Are Wolf Hybrids?

Wolf-dog hybrids are the offspring of a wolf and a domestic dog. There are important distinctions between wolf hybrids that result from mating between a wolf and domestic dog and wolfdogs that simply have recent wolf ancestry.

Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) and wolves (Canis lupus) are different breeds of animal but share similar physical and behavioral features. They are interfertile, meaning they can breed and produce viable offspring together.

In nature, wolf hybrids are rare because wolves distance themselves from other dogs in general. Thus, wolf-dog hybrids usually require human involvement and supervision. Wolfdogs are not considered their own breed due to their relative rarity compared with domestic dog breeds. Wolf hybrids can also vary in their genetic composition. Some might be 50% wolf and 50% dog, while others might be close to 90% one way or another.

Wolf hybrid owners have experienced challenges caring for the animals, as their genetic background can make them inconsistent and unpredictable, leading to dog bites. The wolfdog simply requires more care, attention, and understanding than typical domestic dog breeds.

Can You Own a Wolf Hybrid Legally in Missouri?

Missouri allows people to own wolf hybrids or wolfdogs. However, ownership of wolfdogs is subject to restrictions. The restrictions seek to make sure that pet owners, neighbors, and the community as a whole are safe from potential harm.

Missouri’s goal is to make sure anybody with a wolf hybrid in their possession knows how to care for the animal and keep others safe at the same time. Wolves and wolf-dog hybrids are considered Class II wildlife in Missouri, meaning permits are required and the animals will have enclosure requirements.

The Missouri Department of Conservation requires that wolfdogs be kept behind fencing that is at least nine gauge and with a height of at least 8 feet. The enclosure for a wolf hybrid must have a total square footage of at least 200 square feet. Some communities might also require wolfdog owners to register their pets as exotic animals. This way, the community knows the locations and ownership information for unusual animals that could potentially escape or attack others.

There is no law making all wolf hybrids illegal in Missouri. However, if you are planning to own a wolfdog in Missouri, you must make sure you are in line with state regulations and any local laws set by your county or municipality. Failing to follow regulations can result in fines or the confiscation of the dog.

Failing to adhere to these regulations can endanger your community and neighbors if the animal escapes or attacks someone. Following local, state, and federal regulations for wolf hybrid ownership helps ensure the safety of your community and the continued enjoyment of your wolfdog’s companionship.
