William Barnes, 74, Killed in Head-On Collision on I-57 in Champaign
Champaign, Illinois (January 2, 2018) — A head-on collision involving two vehicles on Interstate 57 in Champaign Friday evening claimed a life of a 74-year-old Chicago man and sent three others to a hospital with injuries, police said.
The deadly collision occurred at around 6:58 p.m. Friday, December 29, near mile marker 225, between Pesotum and Tolono in Champaign.
Authorities said William B. Barnes, 74, of Chicago, was operating a 2005 GMC Envoy south on I-57, near mile marker 225, between Pesotum and Tolono, when he lost control of his car, crossed the median and ended up in the right northbound lane, striking a 2011 Ford F-250, head-on.
Police said Barnes died at the accident scene while Trevor P. Ellerbrake, 31, of Lebanon, the driver of the Ford, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries. Two other passengers in the truck, a 30-year-old woman and a child, reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were also transported to a hospital for treatment.
Police said that all the victims were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
