Melinda Cullen Killed in Crash after Wheel Hub Detach From Semi on I-80 in Joliet

Joliet, Illinois (March 7, 2018) – A 38-year-old Coal City woman was killed after her car was struck by a Wheel hub from a semi-trailer Tuesday afternoon, according to Illinois State Police.

The deadly wreck took place at around 2:18 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 on westbound I-80 near Rowell Avenue in Joliet.

A preliminary investigation indicated that a truck tractor semi-trailer, driven by 59-year-old Antanas Sereiva of Bolingbrook, was traveling eastbound on I-80 when its wheel hub came separated from its rear tractor axle and crossed over into the I-80 westbound lanes entering the windshield of a passenger car striking Melinda Cullen.

The Will County Coroner’s Office said Cullen was taken to an area hospital where she was later declared dead.

Sereiva was charged with a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act violation for ‘Unsafe Equipment,’ authorities said.
