Building codes exist to protect us from disasters such as structural collapse and fires. In our modern, constantly developing society, building codes are essential to the safety and well-being of everyone. Without building codes, structures could be erected without utilizing known safety features, such as fire-resistant and non-toxic materials. In an effort to educate the public in safe, sustainable building practices, May is Building Safety Month. This public awareness campaign serves to reinforce the need for modern building codes, an efficient, code enforcement system, and a well-trained workforce.
This year’s Building Safety theme is Resilient Communities Start With Building Codes. The campaign, presented by the International Code Council (ICC), celebrates advances in building safe, environmentally sustainable, and affordable buildings and homes. This campaign garners worldwide support from corporations, governmental agencies, schools, construction professionals, and the design and safety community. These organizations understand the benefits of safe, sustainable buildings where we live, go to school, work, and play.
In addition to the general theme of this year’s campaign, each week has its own theme. Below is a schedule of each week and its corresponding theme.
The Building Safety campaign helps keep everyone safe by raising awareness around the safety benefits of building codes and code officials. However, the success of this campaign depends on people like you. You can help by promoting Building Safety Month in your community. ICC can provide a news release, sample proclamation, brochures, pencils, kids’ activity pages, and information on how to set up an event. Many of these resources can be downloaded for free from the ICC website.
