Sangamon County, Illinois (January 16, 2018) – Authorities have identified the 44-year-old Springfield man who was killed in a 2-vehicle Collision in Sangamon County Monday noon as Mark Heaton.

The deadly crash happened on Monday, January 15, on I-55 near Mile Marker 82 in Sangamon County.

According to preliminary investigators report, Heaton was operating a green Nissan southbound on I-55 at a higher rate of speed when he lost control of his car, went off the road, crossed the median and hit a bridge wall on the I-55 northbound side.

The Nissan reportedly proceeded into the northbound lane of traffic and struck a northbound red pickup truck driven by a 53-year-old Kinnett man, Illinois State Police said.

The driver of the pickup truck and his passenger, a 55-year-old woman both from Kinnett, Missouri, suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Heaton was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and the 53-year-old and the 55-year-old were wearing seatbelts.
