Washington County, Illinois (January 6, 2018) – A Nebraska man was killed on Friday evening in a hit-and-run collision on Interstate 64 in Washington County, according to Illinois State Police.

The accident took place at around 5:05 p.m. Friday, January 5, on I-64, near milepost 47.

Police said Eugene Tomasello, 56, of Omaha, Nebraska, was driving a 2014 Toyota Avalon eastbound on Interstate 64 when a vehicle driven behind him approached at a high rate of speed to overtake.

That vehicle clipped the Toyota on its driver’s side and caused it to veer off the roadway and crashed into a tree.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the Toyota failed to stop after the crash.

A passenger in the Toyota, Ervin Goeden, 93, of Omaha, was killed in the crash.

Tomasello was not injured.

Another passenger in the Toyota, Patricia Goeden, 81, also of Omaha, sustained major injuries.

The hit-and-run vehicle is believed to be a black Cadillac STS with dark window tint.

Police are conducting an investigation into the crash.
