44-Year-Old Springfield Man Killed, 2 Hurt in 2-Car Crash on I-55 in Sangamon County

Sangamon County, Illinois (January 15, 2018) – A male motorist was killed and two others injured in a two-vehicle collision in Sangamon County Monday noon, according to Illinois state police.

The fatal crash happened around 12:30 p.m. Monday, January 15, on I-55 near Mile Marker 82.

Illinois State Police Trooper reported that a 44-year-old Springfield man was driving a green Nissan southbound on I-55 at a higher rate of speed when he lost control of his car, went off the road, crossed the median and struck a bridge wall on the passenger side of his car.

According to police, the Nissan then continued into the northbound lane of traffic and struck a red pickup truck traveling northbound.

Police said the driver of the pickup truck, a 53-year-old man, and a passenger, a 55-year-old woman both from Kinnett, Missouri, suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The 44-year-old Springfield man died at the scene,

The Springfield man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash while the two other victims were wearing seatbelts, as per a report.

The left lane of northbound I-55 remained shut for about four hours as officials carry out an investigation into the crash, as per a report.
